Why Make Homemade Garlic Knots?

While ordering garlic knots from your favorite pizzeria is always a treat, there’s an undeniable satisfaction in making them yourself. Homemade garlic knots allow you to control the quality of ingredients, adjust the flavors to your preference, and enjoy them fresh out of the oven, when they’re at their absolute best. Plus, this recipe is so incredibly simple and quick that it’s often faster to whip up a batch at home than to drive to the restaurant. They bring that authentic Italian restaurant experience right to your dining table, offering a warmth and aroma that only freshly baked bread can provide.

Garlic Knots Ingredients

Crafting these irresistible garlic knots requires only a handful of readily available ingredients, making this recipe incredibly convenient for any home cook. Here’s what you’ll need:

  • Canned Pizza Dough: This is the secret to a quick and easy recipe! A standard 13-ounce can found in the refrigerated section of your grocery store provides the perfect base, eliminating the need for kneading and proofing. It unrolls with an ideal thickness for tying.
  • Melted Butter: Unsalted butter is preferred to control the sodium content, but salted will work too. It creates that signature rich, golden crust and acts as the perfect vehicle for our garlicky herb mixture.
  • Garlic Powder: While fresh garlic is fantastic, garlic powder offers a consistent, mellow garlic flavor that spreads evenly and doesn’t risk burning during baking.
  • Dried Oregano: A classic Italian herb that brings a warm, earthy, and slightly pungent flavor, essential for that authentic taste.
  • Fresh Parsley: Finely chopped fresh parsley adds a vibrant color and a fresh, herbaceous note that brightens the overall flavor profile. If fresh isn’t available, dried parsley can be substituted (use about 1 teaspoon for every tablespoon of fresh).
  • Parmesan Cheese: Finely grated Parmesan cheese provides a salty, nutty, and umami-rich layer of flavor, contributing to the irresistible aroma and golden finish. Freshly grated Parmesan offers the best taste.
  • Cooking Spray: For preparing your baking sheet, ensuring the knots don’t stick and making clean-up a breeze.

How Do You Make Garlic Knots?

Creating these delightful garlic knots is a straightforward process that yields impressive results. Follow these simple steps for perfect, golden-brown rolls:

  1. Prepare the Dough: Begin by preheating your oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) and lightly coating a baking sheet with cooking spray or lining it with parchment paper for easy cleanup. Carefully remove the pizza dough from its can and unroll it flat onto a clean surface. Using a pizza cutter or sharp knife, slice the dough into 12 even strips.
  2. Tie the Knots: Take each individual strip of dough and tie it into a simple knot shape. As you form the knot, gently tuck the ends underneath the roll. This technique ensures that your knots hold their shape beautifully during baking and look perfectly homemade. Arrange the tied knots on your prepared baking sheet, leaving a little space between each one to allow for expansion.
  3. Prepare the Garlic Butter Mixture: In a small, microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter. Once melted, stir in the garlic powder, dried oregano, fresh chopped parsley, and finely grated Parmesan cheese until well combined. This aromatic mixture is the heart of your garlic knots, infusing them with incredible flavor.
  4. Brush and Bake: Reserve about 1.5 tablespoons of this fragrant butter mixture for later. With a pastry brush, generously coat the top and sides of each dough knot with the remaining garlic butter. This initial brushing is crucial for creating that beautiful golden crust and deeply infused flavor. Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the knots are puffed up, golden brown, and cooked through.
  5. Final Touch and Serve: As soon as the garlic knots come out of the oven, while they are still hot, brush them with the reserved butter mixture. This second coating adds an extra layer of moisture, shine, and an intense burst of fresh garlic and herb flavor. Serve your hot and delicious garlic knots immediately with a side of warm marinara sauce for dipping, and enjoy the praise!

Tips For The Perfect Garlic Knots

  • Embrace Canned Pizza Dough: For ultimate convenience and consistent results, always opt for a can of refrigerated pizza dough. It’s pre-measured, perfectly proofed, and comes out with the ideal thickness, eliminating the need for rolling pins or extra flour, saving you valuable time and effort in the kitchen.
  • The Essential Dipping Sauce: A bowl of warm marinara sauce is non-negotiable for these garlic knots. Its tangy, rich flavor perfectly complements the buttery, savory rolls. Choose your favorite high-quality brand of sauce – I personally love Newman’s Own and Rao’s marinara for their robust flavors. A quick warm-up in the microwave for a few seconds is all it takes to prepare it for dipping.
  • Effortless Cleanup with Parchment Paper: To make post-baking cleanup significantly easier, simply line your sheet pan with a sheet of parchment paper. This prevents any sticky dough or melted butter from adhering to the pan, ensuring a quick and hassle-free wash-up.
  • Freezing for Future Enjoyment: These garlic knots are fantastic for meal prepping! You can easily freeze them for up to three months. To reheat, place the frozen knots directly on a baking sheet and warm them in a preheated oven at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for about 12 to 15 minutes, or until thoroughly heated through and lightly re-crisped.
  • Uniformity for Even Baking: When slicing your pizza dough, aim for strips of relatively equal size. This ensures that all your garlic knots bake evenly at the same rate, preventing some from being overdone while others are still doughy.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Pan: Give your knots room to breathe! Arranging them with a little space between each on the baking sheet allows hot air to circulate properly, leading to even baking and that desirable golden-brown exterior.

Quick Tip

For clean, even slices of dough, a pizza cutter is your best friend. Its sharp, rolling blade makes quick work of the dough. If you don’t have one handy, a pair of sharp kitchen shears can also be used effectively to cut the strips.

Serving Suggestions

Garlic knots are incredibly versatile and pair wonderfully with a variety of meals, especially Italian cuisine. Here are some ideas to make them shine:

  • Classic Italian Dinners: Serve alongside lasagna, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parmesan, or any pasta dish. They’re perfect for soaking up rich sauces.
  • Soups and Salads: Offer them as a delicious bread option with hearty minestrone, creamy tomato soup, or a fresh garden salad.
  • Pizza Night: Complement your homemade or takeout pizza with these garlic knots for an extra layer of garlicky goodness.
  • Party Appetizer: Arrange them on a platter with multiple dipping sauces (marinara, alfredo, garlic aioli) for an crowd-pleasing party snack.

Storage and Reheating

Leftover garlic knots, if there are any, can be stored properly to enjoy later. Place cooled garlic knots in an airtight container or a resealable plastic bag at room temperature for up to 2-3 days. For longer storage, they can be frozen as described in our tips section. To reheat, a toaster oven or a regular oven at 350°F (175°C) for 5-7 minutes works best to restore their crisp exterior and soft interior. Microwaving is an option for quick reheating, but it may make them a bit chewy rather than crisp.

Recipe FAQs

What are garlic knots made of?

Garlic knots are typically made from soft pizza dough, which is rolled into strips, tied into a knot, and then generously coated in a flavorful garlic butter sauce, often seasoned with herbs and Parmesan cheese, before being baked until golden.

How do you cook garlic knots?

Garlic knots are baked in a preheated oven, usually at around 400 degrees F (200 degrees C), for approximately 10-12 minutes. They are cooked until they achieve a beautiful golden-brown color and are puffed and tender throughout.

Are garlic knots an East Coast thing?

While garlic knots are widely believed to have originated in New York City pizzerias and are a staple on the East Coast, their delicious appeal has spread far beyond. Today, you can find them on restaurant menus and in home kitchens across the United States and internationally, delighting bread lovers everywhere.

Can I use homemade pizza dough for garlic knots?

Absolutely! While canned pizza dough makes this recipe incredibly quick, homemade pizza dough can certainly be used. Just ensure your homemade dough is ready to be shaped and has a good elasticity for tying into knots. Adjust baking times slightly if needed, as homemade dough may differ in thickness and moisture content from canned versions.

Garlic Knot Variations

While the classic garlic knot recipe is undoubtedly delicious, there’s plenty of room to customize the flavor profile to perfectly suit your taste preferences or to match your meal. Get creative with these exciting variations:

  • For the Ultimate Garlic Lover: If you’re a true devotee of garlic, don’t hesitate to intensify the flavor. Increase the amount of garlic powder to 3/4 teaspoon, or for a bolder, fresher taste, substitute 1 teaspoon of freshly minced garlic for the powder. Just be mindful that fresh garlic can brown more quickly in the oven.
  • Flaky Knots with Biscuit Dough: If you prefer a lighter, flakier texture, you can easily use canned biscuit dough instead of pizza dough. Simply stretch out each biscuit into a strip, tie it into a knot, and proceed with the recipe. The baking time might be slightly shorter due to the different dough consistency.
  • Sweet Cinnamon Sugar Knots: For a delightful dessert twist, transform these savory knots into a sweet treat. In a bowl, mix together 1/3 cup melted butter, 1/3 cup granulated sugar, and 2 teaspoons of ground cinnamon. Spread this sweet mixture on your dough strips before tying them into knots and baking. After baking, an optional drizzle of cream cheese glaze can make them extra special.
  • Cheesy Garlic Knots: Elevate the cheese factor by adding a blend of Italian cheeses. Before baking, sprinkle a mix of shredded mozzarella, provolone, or Italian blend cheese over the butter-brushed knots. The melted cheese will create a gooey, irresistible crust.
  • Spicy Garlic Knots: Add a touch of heat by incorporating a pinch of red pepper flakes into your garlic butter mixture. Start with 1/4 teaspoon and adjust to your preferred level of spice. This adds a fantastic kick that pairs well with hearty Italian dishes.
  • Rosemary Parmesan Knots: For an earthy aroma and distinct flavor, add 1 teaspoon of finely chopped fresh rosemary to your garlic butter. Rosemary and garlic are a match made in heaven, and the Parmesan will round out the flavors beautifully.

I always make sure to keep a can of pizza dough stocked in my fridge, ensuring I’m prepared for whenever a garlic knot craving strikes. These versatile little rolls aren’t just a superb side dish; they also make for an absolutely fantastic and effortlessly impressive party appetizer that guests will adore!
