Essential Orange Chicken Ingredients
Crafting this irresistibly flavorful dish requires a thoughtful combination of common pantry staples and fresh, vibrant produce. Each component plays an absolutely crucial role in achieving the desired complex flavor profile and the signature crispy texture that makes orange chicken so beloved. Below is a detailed breakdown of what you’ll need:
For the Crispy Chicken:
- Chicken Thighs (Boneless, Skinless): Preferred for their inherent tenderness, juiciness, and rich flavor, chicken thighs are far less likely to dry out during the frying process compared to breast meat. Ensure they are cut into uniform 1-inch pieces to promote even cooking.
- Eggs: Lightly beaten, eggs serve as a vital binder, allowing the dry flour and cornstarch coating to adhere seamlessly to each piece of chicken, forming the foundation of the crispy crust.
- Salt and Black Pepper: Basic yet essential seasonings that penetrate the chicken, enhancing its natural savory flavors before the coating and sauce are applied.
- All-Purpose Flour: This forms the primary structural base of the crispy, golden-brown coating, providing substance and texture.
- Cornstarch: A secret weapon for achieving that signature, extra-crispy, light, and airy texture, as well as a beautiful golden-brown finish on the fried chicken. It also plays a dual role in thickening the sauce.
- Vegetable Oil (or Canola/Peanut Oil): A sufficient quantity of a neutral oil with a high smoke point is indispensable for deep frying the chicken to perfect crispiness without burning or imparting off-flavors.
- Sesame Seeds: Used primarily as a garnish, these tiny seeds add a delightful nutty aroma, a subtle textural crunch, and an appealing visual contrast to the finished dish.
- Green Onions (Scallions): Sliced thinly, green onions serve as a fresh, bright garnish, introducing a mild oniony flavor and a pop of vibrant green color that elevates the presentation.
For the Delectable Orange Sauce:
The star of the show, this bright and perfectly balanced orange sauce, requires the following ingredients:
- Vegetable Oil: A small amount is used to gently sauté the aromatics, building a flavorful base for the sauce.
- Minced Fresh Ginger: Provides a warm, pungent, slightly spicy, and incredibly aromatic depth, which is a distinctive and essential characteristic of authentic Asian cuisine.
- Minced Garlic: Another crucial aromatic, garlic adds a robust, savory complexity that complements the other flavors beautifully.
- Orange Juice: The undisputed foundation of the sauce, offering its signature bright, zesty citrus tang and natural sweetness. Freshly squeezed orange juice is highly recommended for the best flavor.
- Soy Sauce: Contributes a deep umami flavor, essential saltiness, and a rich, savory backbone to the sauce. Consider using low-sodium soy sauce if you are managing your salt intake.
- Brown Sugar: This adds a rich, molasses-like sweetness that perfectly balances the acidity of the orange juice and the saltiness of the soy sauce, creating a well-rounded flavor profile.
- Orange Zest: Absolutely critical for intensifying the fresh, vibrant orange flavor and aromatic essence. Do not skip this ingredient, as it significantly boosts the authenticity and brightness of the sauce.
- Crushed Red Pepper Flakes: These deliver a gentle warmth and a subtle, pleasant kick of heat. The amount can be easily adjusted to match your preferred spice level.
- Rice Vinegar: Introduces a clean, mild acidity that brightens the entire sauce and perfectly enhances the overall sweet and sour balance, preventing it from being overly cloying.
- Sesame Oil: A few drops added near the end of cooking infuse the sauce with a distinctive, deeply nutty aroma and flavor, which is a hallmark of many delicious Asian dishes.
- Water and Cornstarch Slurry: A simple mixture that, when added to the simmering sauce, acts as a thickening agent. It transforms the liquid into a glossy, luscious consistency that beautifully clings to every piece of crispy chicken.
Step-by-Step Guide: How Do You Make Orange Chicken?
Creating this delicious, restaurant-quality orange chicken at home is a rewarding process that can be efficiently broken down into two primary stages: meticulously preparing and frying the chicken to crispy perfection, and then skillfully crafting the rich, flavorful orange sauce. Follow these detailed, step-by-step instructions for consistently perfect results:
Stage 1: Preparing and Frying the Crispy Chicken
- Prepare the Egg Wash: In a medium-sized mixing bowl, lightly beat two large eggs. Season them generously with a pinch of salt and black pepper to taste. This initial seasoning helps infuse flavor directly into the chicken pieces.
- Create the Dry Coating Mixture: In a separate shallow bowl or on a wide plate, combine 1/2 cup of all-purpose flour with 1/2 cup of cornstarch. Whisk these dry ingredients together thoroughly until they are uniformly mixed. The cornstarch is indispensable here, as it’s the key to achieving that signature extra-crispy, golden-brown texture.
- Heat the Frying Oil: Carefully pour approximately 3 inches of your chosen neutral oil (such as vegetable, canola, or peanut oil) into a deep, heavy-bottomed pan, Dutch oven, or cast-iron pot. Heat the oil steadily to a precise temperature of 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). For absolute accuracy and safety, utilizing a reliable deep-frying thermometer is critically important to maintain the optimal temperature.
- Dredge the Chicken Pieces: Take each individual 1-inch piece of boneless, skinless chicken thigh. First, dip it thoroughly into the seasoned egg mixture, ensuring it is completely coated. Allow any excess egg to drip off naturally. Next, gently roll and press the chicken piece into the flour and cornstarch mixture, ensuring a complete and even coating on all sides. Repeat this careful dredging process for every single piece of chicken.
- Fry in Controlled Batches: Once the oil is at temperature, carefully lower 8-9 coated chicken pieces into the hot oil. It is crucial to avoid overcrowding the pan, as this will significantly lower the oil temperature and lead to greasy, less crispy chicken. Fry each batch of chicken for approximately 5 minutes, or until each piece develops a beautiful, uniformly golden-brown color and achieves a wonderfully crispy texture.
- Drain Excess Oil: As each batch of chicken is fried to perfection, use a slotted spoon or a spider strainer to carefully remove the pieces from the hot oil. Transfer them immediately to a wire rack positioned over a sheet of paper towels. This setup allows any excess oil to drain away, helping to maintain maximum crispiness. Repeat the entire frying process with all the remaining chicken batches.
Stage 2: Crafting the Sweet and Tangy Orange Sauce
While your chicken is frying to perfection, you can efficiently prepare the delectable and fragrant orange sauce:
- Sauté Aromatics: In a separate medium-sized skillet or saucepan, heat 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the minced fresh ginger and minced garlic. Sauté these aromatics for about 1 minute, stirring continuously, until they release their fragrant oils. Be vigilant to avoid burning the garlic, which can turn bitter.
- Combine Sauce Liquids and Seasonings: Into the same pan, pour in 1 cup of orange juice, 1/4 cup of soy sauce, 1/2 cup of packed brown sugar, 2 teaspoons of fresh orange zest, 1/2 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes, 2 tablespoons of rice vinegar, and 1 teaspoon of sesame oil. Stir all these ingredients thoroughly to ensure they are well combined.
- Bring to a Gentle Simmer: Increase the heat slightly to medium-high and bring the entire sauce mixture to a gentle simmer. Continue stirring occasionally to ensure the brown sugar fully dissolves and integrates into the liquid.
- Thicken with Cornstarch Slurry: In a small, separate bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup of cold water and 2 tablespoons of cornstarch until a smooth, lump-free slurry forms. Gradually pour this cornstarch slurry into the simmering orange sauce while simultaneously stirring constantly. Continue to cook and stir for an additional 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has visibly thickened to a glossy, desirable consistency that beautifully coats the back of a spoon.
- Toss Chicken in Sauce: Once all the chicken has been fried and the sauce has reached its perfect thickness, add the crispy chicken pieces directly into the pan with the warm orange sauce. Gently toss the chicken using tongs or a spatula, ensuring that every single piece is thoroughly and evenly coated in the rich, vibrant, and aromatic sauce.
- Garnish and Serve Immediately: Generously sprinkle the finished orange chicken with 1 tablespoon of toasted sesame seeds and 1/4 cup of freshly sliced green onions for added flavor, texture, and visual appeal. For an extra touch of gourmet presentation, you can also garnish with a bit of additional fresh orange zest. Serve this delightful dish immediately and savor every single sweet, tangy, and wonderfully crispy bite!

Mastering the Art of Crispy Chicken: Pro Tips
Achieving truly restaurant-quality crispy orange chicken at home is far simpler than you might imagine, especially when armed with these expert tips and tricks:
- Serve Immediately for Ultimate Crispiness: This magnificent recipe is undeniably at its absolute peak when served immediately after the chicken has been gently tossed in the glorious orange sauce. Over time, the wonderfully crispy coating will inevitably begin to soften as it absorbs the moisture from the delicious sauce. For the ultimate textural contrast and an unparalleled dining experience, ensure you serve it piping hot!
- Thoughtful Accompaniments for a Complete Meal: To construct a truly well-rounded, balanced, and deeply satisfying meal, thoughtfully consider pairing your flavorful orange chicken with a complementary starch. Time-honored and classic choices include perfectly steamed white rice or, for a more health-conscious option, hearty brown rice, nutritious quinoa, or even light and fluffy cauliflower rice. Additionally, Asian-style noodles such as comforting lo mein or savory chow mein are fantastic alternatives that beautifully soak up and complement the rich, vibrant sauce.
- Strategic Advance Preparation for Convenience: If you’re contemplating making this recipe ahead of time or preparing it for a future occasion, it is absolutely crucial to store the perfectly fried chicken and the prepared orange sauce separately. Once the chicken is fried, allow it to cool completely on a wire rack to prevent steaming and sogginess before transferring it to an airtight container and refrigerating. Prepare the sauce and store it in its own separate airtight container. When you’re ready to enjoy your meal, gently reheat the chicken in a single layer on a baking sheet in a preheated oven at 400 degrees F (200 degrees C) for approximately 10-15 minutes, or until it regains its desired crispiness. Concurrently, gently warm the sauce on the stovetop over low heat. Then, combine these components just before serving for optimal results. For longer storage, you can even freeze the breaded (but uncooked) chicken pieces and the sauce separately, frying and assembling them only when you are ready to eat.
- The Importance of Small Batch Frying: To guarantee that every single piece of chicken cooks uniformly, reaches its internal temperature safely, and develops optimal crispiness, it is unequivocally best to fry the chicken in small, manageable batches. Overcrowding the frying pan will drastically reduce the oil’s temperature, leading to chicken that absorbs too much oil, becoming greasy, and failing to achieve that coveted crispy exterior. Allow each batch ample space to fry properly and evenly.
- Selecting the Ideal Frying Oil: Always, without exception, opt for a neutral-flavored oil with a high smoke point when deep frying. This critical choice ensures that your oil will not burn prematurely, produce unpleasant odors, or impart any unwanted flavors to your delicious chicken. Excellent and highly recommended choices include vegetable oil, canola oil, and peanut oil.
- Double Dredging for Extra Crunch: For an exceptionally crispy and robust coating, consider implementing a double-dredging technique for your chicken. After the initial dip in the egg wash and then in the flour mixture, dip the chicken back into the egg wash once more, and then coat it thoroughly in the flour mixture again. This creates a thicker, more resilient crust that stands up beautifully to the sauce.
- Fresh Orange Zest: The Flavor Amplifier: While using bottled orange juice is undoubtedly convenient, resist the temptation to skip the fresh orange zest. This ingredient is a powerful flavor amplifier, providing a vibrant, concentrated orange aroma and a profound citrusy flavor that elevates the sauce from merely good to truly extraordinary and authentic.
Quick Frying Tip: The Importance of Oil Temperature
It’s absolutely vital to use a deep-frying thermometer for this recipe to ensure consistently perfect results and safe cooking. If the oil is too cold, the chicken coating will inevitably absorb an excessive amount of grease, resulting in a heavy, soggy, and unappetizing texture. Conversely, if the oil is allowed to become too hot, the coating may burn quickly and prematurely on the outside before the chicken meat has had a chance to cook thoroughly, leaving it dangerously raw in the center. Always aim for a consistent 350°F (175°C) to achieve the ideal golden crispiness and perfectly cooked chicken every single time.

Orange Chicken Recipe FAQs
This recipe is crafted to be incredibly close to the iconic Panda Express orange chicken, mirroring its signature sweet, tangy, and savory flavor profile. It features perfectly fried chicken pieces coated in a vibrant citrus sauce that will transport you straight to your favorite fast-casual Chinese restaurant. While classic Panda Express orange chicken typically omits sesame seeds and green onions, I’ve chosen to include them here for their added color, delightful texture, and a touch of fresh flavor. These additions are entirely optional; feel free to omit them if you desire an exact, purist replica of the original!
Absolutely! While this particular recipe focuses on achieving the beloved crispy fried version, orange chicken can indeed be successfully adapted for preparation in a slow cooker. The preparation method for a slow cooker will, of course, differ significantly, as the chicken won’t be deep-fried. If you prefer a more hands-off approach resulting in tender, saucy chicken without the crispy exterior, you can definitely explore dedicated slow cooker orange chicken recipes that typically involve simmering the chicken directly in the sauce until fork-tender.
The quintessential orange chicken sauce is a masterful blend that achieves a harmonious balance of sweet, tangy, and savory notes. Its core ingredients usually include a robust base of fresh orange juice and bright orange zest, soy sauce for that essential umami depth, brown sugar for a rich sweetness, and rice vinegar to provide a delicate acidity. Aromatic elements like minced garlic and fresh ginger are key contributors to its characteristic flavor. Crushed red chili flakes are often incorporated to deliver a subtle, pleasant kick of heat, and cornstarch is absolutely essential for achieving that desirable thick, glossy, and clingy consistency.
Both orange chicken and General Tso’s chicken are incredibly popular Chinese-American dishes that feature breaded and fried chicken coated in a rich, flavorful sauce. The primary distinction lies in their distinct flavor profiles. Orange chicken is predominantly sweeter and showcases a pronounced, zesty citrus flavor derived from orange juice and zest. General Tso’s chicken, in contrast, tends to be more savory, frequently spicier with the inclusion of dried chili peppers, and notably lacks the distinct citrus component. While both are undeniably delicious, they cater to slightly different taste preferences.
Yes, you absolutely can use boneless, skinless chicken breast as a substitute for chicken thighs in this recipe. However, it’s worth noting that chicken thighs are generally recommended due to their slightly higher fat content, which keeps them more tender, moist, and flavorful throughout the frying process. If you opt for chicken breast, be particularly careful not to overcook it, as breast meat can dry out more easily and become tough. Ensure you still cut the breast into uniform 1-inch pieces for consistent cooking.
This recipe includes 1/2 teaspoon of crushed red pepper flakes, which is typically intended to provide a very mild, pleasant background warmth rather than overt spiciness. It’s designed to be family-friendly. However, if you are a fan of heat and prefer a spicier dish, you can easily increase the amount of red pepper flakes to 1 teaspoon or even more, according to your taste. Alternatively, a dash or two of sriracha sauce can be stirred into the orange sauce for a bolder, fiery kick.
While deep frying yields the crispiest, most authentic texture for this orange chicken copycat, you can certainly bake or air fry the chicken for a lighter version. For baking, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C), spray the breaded chicken with cooking oil, and bake for 20-25 minutes, flipping halfway, until golden and cooked through. For air frying, cook at 375°F (190°C) for 15-20 minutes, shaking the basket occasionally, until crispy. Keep in mind the texture will be slightly different, but still delicious when coated in the sauce!

Creative Flavor Variations and Serving Suggestions
While this orange chicken recipe is incredibly delicious and satisfying as-is, its inherent versatility makes it wonderfully adaptable. Feel free to explore these easy customizations to suit various tastes, dietary preferences, or simply to add a creative twist to your meal. Don’t hesitate to experiment and truly make this dish your own!
- Protein Alternatives for Every Palate:
- Chicken Breast: For a leaner protein option, you can seamlessly substitute boneless, skinless chicken breast for chicken thighs. If choosing breast meat, be particularly mindful not to overcook it, as it tends to dry out more quickly.
- Other Meats: Unleash your culinary creativity by experimenting with thinly sliced beef (such as tender flank steak or flavorful sirloin) or plump, succulent shrimp for a distinct change in texture and flavor profile. For an alternative preparation that avoids deep frying, I highly recommend exploring my orange shrimp and broccoli with garlic sesame fried rice or a robust and satisfying orange beef stir fry.
- Vegetarian Option: For a completely plant-based rendition, crispy pan-fried or baked tofu or tempeh can be an absolutely excellent substitute. Both absorb the delicious orange sauce beautifully, offering a hearty and flavorful vegetarian experience.
- Boost Your Meal with Vibrant Vegetables:
- To infuse your orange chicken with extra nutrition, vibrant color, and engaging textures, generously toss some pre-cooked vegetables in with the chicken and sauce just before serving. Some fantastic and complementary options include perfectly steamed or stir-fried broccoli florets, crisp-tender green beans, delicate bok choy, thinly shredded cabbage, crunchy bean sprouts, thinly sliced carrots, or savory, earthy mushrooms. Ensure your chosen vegetables are cooked to your desired tenderness before combining them with the sauced chicken.
- Fine-Tuning Flavor Profiles to Perfection:
- Enhanced Sweetness and Citrus Burst: For an even deeper, more complex sweet orange flavor, consider stirring in a tablespoon of orange marmalade or a tiny hint of orange extract (start with just 1/4 teaspoon) into the sauce during its simmering stage. This small addition can dramatically amplify and enrich the citrus notes.
- A Bolder, Spicier Kick: If you are a true enthusiast of heat, easily dial up the spice quotient by adding a more generous amount of crushed red chili flakes to taste. Alternatively, a teaspoon or two of sriracha or even a subtle pinch of fiery cayenne pepper can be stirred into the sauce for a bolder, more fiery element.
- Consideration for Salt Sensitivity: For individuals monitoring their sodium intake, a simple and effective adjustment is to opt for a low-sodium soy sauce. You can also reduce the overall amount of soy sauce specified in the recipe and adjust the final seasoning with a tiny pinch of salt if needed, once the sauce has come together.
- Maximize Ginger and Garlic Power: If you adore the pungent, aromatic punch of ginger and garlic, don’t hesitate to increase the quantity of minced fresh ginger or garlic added to the sauce. Their bold flavors will significantly enhance the dish.
- Innovative Serving Ideas Beyond Traditional Rice:
- Elegant Lettuce Wraps: For a lighter, incredibly refreshing, and interactive meal experience, serve the crispy orange chicken nestled within crisp lettuce cups, such as butter lettuce or iceberg.
- Hearty Noodle Bowls: Combine your orange chicken with your favorite Asian noodles, such as chewy ramen or thick udon, to create a comforting and substantial noodle bowl that’s perfect for a satisfying meal.
- Stir-fry Foundation: Utilize the orange chicken as a delicious protein base for a larger, more elaborate vegetable stir-fry, adding a multitude of colorful veggies.
- Delectable Appetizer: Cut the chicken into smaller, bite-sized pieces and serve it as a scrumptious and crowd-pleasing appetizer for parties and gatherings.

Whether you find yourself preferring the time-honored crispy, deep-fried version of this classic or are inclined to explore a lighter, perhaps healthier slow cooker alternative, this orange chicken recipe consistently delivers exceptional flavor, heartwarming comfort, and undeniable satisfaction every single time. It boasts such a bold, captivating sweetness perfectly balanced by a delightful tang that it genuinely becomes incredibly hard to put your fork down! Orange Chicken
Pin Recipe
Author: Sara Welch
This orange chicken is a Panda Express copycat recipe with crispy chicken in a sweet and tangy orange sauce. My version tastes just as good as the restaurant version and is easy to make at home!
Prep Time: 25 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Total Time: 45 minutes
Course: Main
Cuisine: Asian
Servings: 6
Ingredients
For the chicken:
- 1 1/2 lbs boneless skinless chicken thighs, cut into 1 inch pieces
- 2 eggs, lightly beaten
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup all purpose flour
- 1/2 cup cornstarch
- Oil for frying (e.g., vegetable, canola, or peanut oil)
- 1 tablespoon sesame seeds, for garnish
- 1/4 cup sliced green onions, for garnish
For the orange sauce:
- 2 teaspoons vegetable oil
- 2 teaspoons minced fresh ginger
- 1 teaspoon minced garlic
- 1 cup orange juice (preferably freshly squeezed)
- 1/4 cup soy sauce (low-sodium optional)
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 2 teaspoons orange zest, plus additional for garnish if desired
- 1/2 teaspoon crushed red pepper (adjust amount to your preferred spice level)
- 2 tablespoons rice vinegar
- 1 teaspoon sesame oil
- 1/2 cup water
- 2 tablespoons cornstarch (for sauce thickening slurry)
Instructions
For the chicken:
- Place the lightly beaten eggs in a bowl; season with salt and pepper to taste.
- In a separate shallow bowl or on a plate, mix together the 1/2 cup flour and 1/2 cup cornstarch until well combined.
- Heat about 3 inches of oil in a deep pan (such as a Dutch oven or deep skillet) to 350 degrees F (175°C). Use a deep-frying thermometer to ensure accuracy.
- Dip each piece of chicken into the egg mixture, allowing any excess to drip off. Then, thoroughly coat the chicken in the flour and cornstarch mixture, pressing gently to ensure adherence. Repeat this for all chicken pieces.
- Carefully fry 8-9 pieces of chicken at a time for approximately 5 minutes, or until they are golden brown and wonderfully crispy. Avoid overcrowding the pan to maintain oil temperature and crispiness. Remove fried chicken with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels or a wire rack to drain. Repeat with all remaining chicken.
For the sauce:
- While the chicken is frying, prepare the orange sauce.
- In a saucepan, heat 2 teaspoons of vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and ginger and cook for 1 minute until fragrant, stirring constantly.
- Add the orange juice, soy sauce, brown sugar, orange zest, crushed red pepper, rice vinegar, and sesame oil to the pan. Stir well and bring the mixture to a gentle simmer.
- In a small bowl, whisk together the 1/2 cup water and 2 tablespoons cornstarch until smooth to create a slurry. Gradually pour this cornstarch slurry into the simmering sauce, stirring constantly, and cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce has thickened to a glossy consistency.
- Once all chicken is fried and the sauce is thickened, add the crispy chicken pieces to the pan with the sauce. Toss gently to ensure every piece of chicken is thoroughly coated.
- Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of sesame seeds and 1/4 cup of sliced green onions. Serve immediately. Garnish with additional orange zest if desired for extra visual appeal and flavor.
Notes
- It’s very important to use a deep-frying thermometer for this recipe to maintain the optimal oil temperature. If the oil is too cold, the chicken coating will absorb too much grease, resulting in a soggy and heavy texture. If the oil is too hot, the coating may burn quickly on the outside before the meat is cooked through, leaving it raw in the center. A consistent 350°F (175°C) is key.
- This dish is absolutely best when served immediately to fully appreciate the delicious contrast of the crispy chicken coating and the rich, flavorful orange sauce. The coating on the chicken will naturally soften over time as it absorbs moisture from the sauce.
